New Idea Baler PartsI'm thinking again (that's always dangerous) about getting a round baler. I may be getting some cows of my own as the older fellow who has cows here has been hinting that he is about ready to call it a day. I've got a square baler, 55HP tractor and a 7' mower conditioner already, so the big baler would be easy to add. The problem is, I've never used one. From a parts standpoint, a Deere would make the most sense as I'm in the dealership 3 or 4 times a week getting parts for where I work. The next closest dealers are an hour away and they are Vermeer, New Holland and CASE/IH. It will have to be used but I am a mechanic and I shouldn't need to make more than 75 or so rolls a year, if that. Baby Talks Dirty, 6. Can't Put a Price on Love, 7. Good Girls Don't, 5. Proof: the very best of the knack. I'd really like to hear what you all run and why. Also, electric vs hyd tie, bale moniter or no, smooth or rough belts, etc. The only ones I've actually looked at are a Deere 385 from an estate (at the dealer on consignment for $7500) and a Vermeer 605H (private individual for $3500). My first round baler was a IH 241. It got the hay into a round shape for hauling but was very user unfriendly. I still have it as a curiosity, but have no intentions of using it again. I now have a NH848 chain baler. It was well used (cheap) when i got it, but it keeps turning out nice bales. New Idea 486 Round BalerI have used a NH 644 with a bale monitor and auto tie alarm, but the 848 has hydraulic tie and an overload shear pin, in case you are daydreaming and forget to tie off the bale before it gets big enough to cause strain on the bale chamber. With a little experience at weaving back and forth, you can make a nice shaped bale w/o a monitor. I couldn't justify the extra cost for the 200-250 bales i make a year. One other factor to consider is bale width. If you are hauling them, you can get 2- 4' bales side by side on a trailer; not so if you have 5' wide bales. We use a well used JD 430, has a monitor, auto hydraulic tie and in my opinion it is a brilliant machine for its time. It has great capacity and with an experienced operator it makes great bales every time. It will do baleage as well which is a bonus if you know someone with a bagger or tuber, or if you just want to bale up a few wet bales to feed immediately. It runs fine with a 684 and could be done with less at a lower travel speed. I generally bale in H1 which in a 684 with the fast transmission is clipping along pretty well. If you can find a 430 cheap it would be a great machine for you. It is going to hard in the future to buy a round baler. I have heard from reliable sources that the goverment is going to make them illegal. Cows aren't getting a square meal.:-) Knowing how this administration thinks, you might not be too far off in your prediction, afterall, hay may be the leading cause of bovine flatulence. I wouldn't put ANYTHING past the monkey king and his merry band of loony comrades. When balers are outlawed, only criminals will have balers. (And the owners of illegal balers will be euthanized).
